That’s an interesting question.
The iPad Pro… hmm, I usually don’t recommend using tablet devices for coding. However, I’ve heard that the iPad pro is really closing up to the quality/abilities of a personal computer. My general advice is to go with a laptop instead (article: https://data36.com/best-computer-laptop-for-a-data-scientist/) But maybe the iPad pro could work, too. I don’t have hands-on experience with it, though. :-I Sorry, Tomi

I am a computer science major, and currently trying to learn AI and data science. I am trying to decide if I should buy a laptop, or a desktop with ipad pro. I will be doing a lot of coding, and personal AI projects.

pros I can think of Ipad is that I can be very productive with it for my classes. I can take notes, download ppt slides, record lectures, and look things up all at the same time. it is very light and portable and I don’t have to carry notes, books, laptop, charger, pen etc all that stuff. Ipad is an one in all device.

however, I feel like coding on Ipad won’t be easy. there are many coding platforms (apps) I can use, but I know it’ll be a pain in the butt to deal with setting up the right environment especially when I am not an os expert.

Do you think I’ll be able to use remote servers and run projects on an ipad like you described above? If not, what do you think about getting a cheap desktop that I can use as a main coding platform, and accsess that via a teamviewer or something similar? Thanks for all your articles they are very helpful

hey Kamal,

that’s a great question.
On the server, you can use mcedit — which is a bit more user-friendly than vim or nano, in my opinion, at least.

But I prefer to use Sublime Text 3 remotely — via this nice little addition:

I’ll write an article about it, too, if needed!

Kudos for that! However, I learned that I can’t open graphical interface text editor (e.g. sublime, atom) on cloud. I can’t be writing python scripts using vim/nano lolz. Just want to do know what do you do? Write locally and then FTP to your server? Doesn’t it beat the purpose of using the server then? Thanks for all your guides here!

Except: f.lux. I heard iTerm2 from your class.

Btw, if you don’t mind – can you please also visit my music page too on Spotify? I had 3 songs in Indonesian and I will release one English song on May 14, 2020. (Tips: Search “Ari Kuncoro”).
